The Components of Expression
Variations on a theme

Eyes: This page illustrates why such great emphasis is placed on eye size and shape..

The first picture is of the original dog who has a very nice expression.

The second illustration shows a dog with small, round eyes...often the result of a stop that is too full or wide with a lack of chiseling.

The two dogs at the bottom of the page show the effect of a lighter eye on expression. In the dog on the left only the eye color has been changed. Because the fuller round eye is most often accompanied by a flared back skull, the last dog on this page has had his skull broadened to allow for the larger, forward set eye.
Except for the last picture on this page the only thing that was changed on these heads was the shape or color of the eye.
