HISTORY
THE STANDARD
The USNMC Standards committee worked for several years to draft the FCI standard into AKC format and terminology. In 1996, this standard was reviewed by the AKC Standards committee and found acceptable by the AKC for approval. In Summer, 1996, the standard was approved and accepted by the USNMC membership with an 85% approval rating.
The standard was also reviewed by the author of the FCI standard, by the Italian Kennel Club (ENCI) and by the Italian Parent Club. All agreed that the new "USNMC Standard" (now the AKC standard) accurately described the same dog as the FCI standard.
In 2001, with the Neapolitan Mastiff moving into AKC Miscellaneous Class, the AKC Standards group again reviewed the standard. A few minor verbiage changes were suggested for clarification and adherence to new wording standards. The USNMC standards committee developed a new draft, which was approved by the AKC standards group, and in Summer, 2001, was approved by the USNMC membership with a 92% approval rating.
This is the AKC standard that we present to you here.
